1Gbps services are everywhere now. The number of consumer gigabit broadband subscribers will grow to 65 million by 2022, 7% of the total. Disrupters have flourished. But for many, 10Gbps will be more lucrative for a revenue uplift.
More than a hundred operators offer gigabit services today. Intense competition, saturation in mature fixed broadband countries, and technology evolution will all drive an increasing number of operators to offer gigabit services.
We forecast that the number of consumer fixed broadband subscribers on gigabit speed tiers worldwide will grow from almost 1.3 million at the end of 2016 to 65 million by 2022, an astonishing CAGR of 88%, but only 7% of the total.
Offering gigabit services at very attractive price points has helped some challenger service providers like HKBN, M1, Google, and Hyperoptic disrupt their respective markets, grab market share or at least establish their presence as a technology leader, and raise the bandwidth bar.
