Mimecast adds services

Mimecast adds services

Mimecast, a UK-based provider of hosted unified email management, announced at Storage Expo, held in London last week, that it will be using its hosted platform to provide services for Microsoft Outlook users, with plans for additional services to support Exchange and SharePoint deployments.

Comment: Mimecast, which states that it has 1,000 clients, including 1 in 4 of the UK's top law firms as customers for email archiving, is seeking to differentiate itself further from managed service and onsite email management providers by extending the functionality to deal with a wider range of content.

At present the company offers a single solution for email security, continuity and archiving, which is delivered on-demand via the web, from a secure multi-site, triple redundant facility, with 'carrier grade' infrastructure. It offers a single price for all the functionality, including six months archiving in the lowest priced option.

Mimecast is picking up on Microsoft's Software plus Services model, where the Redmond, US-based company will provide hosted applications accessible via the web which in-house 'clients' can utilise either on the desktop or server.

Mimecast services for Outlook announced at Storage Expo will provide three initial functions:

  • Live continuity for Outlook - enables end users on Outlook to continue receiving emails and working even in the event of a full Exchange outage.
  • End user search - enhances Outlook's search capability to include emails in the corporate archive held by Mimecast via the web.
  • Smart folders and document views - offers dynamic grouping of related email and document items for faster navigation in Outlook.
A fourth service will be to harvest existing data into the Mimecast platform. Current services for Exchange will include gateway and routing, anti-spam, anti-virus and policies, data archiving, and during 2008 data recovery direct to Exchange is expected. SharePoint services to be offered include document version archiving, information profiling and leak prevention, and Mimecast workspace integration.

Obviously such services will be of most immediate benefit to existing Mimecast customers, but with this range of functionality, it appears that Mimecast is hoping to position itself as a high-end player in what is becoming a very competitive archiving market.
