On 7 May 2008 Sprint and its partners finally announced a deal around WiMAX that had been rumoured for months. Sprint will spin off its WiMAX efforts into a merger with Clearwire.

German incumbent Deutsche Telekom has posted its 1Q08 results. Revenues were down 3% year-on-year to €14.98 billion. EBITDA was up 9% to €4.95 billion, mainly due to the sale of the Media and Broadcast unit. As a result net income rose 101% on 1Q07.

Verizon has reported its first-quarter financial results. Revenues grew by 5.5% year-on-year, mostly driven by growth in wireless, broadband and television services, while its operating margin also grew year-on-year, to 18.7%.

On 23 April 2008, Ecuador's regulator Conatel rejected America Movil's third offer to renew its mobile licence. The company, operating under the brandname Porta, will offer mobile services until the end of August.

Motorola has released its first-quarter 2008 results and, on the handset side, they make grim reading. The other divisions performed much better.

Sony Ericsson's results for 1Q08 are in line with the profit warning it gave in March, but show a steep drop in operating profitability.

Sonopia, a US MVNE, has significantly scaled back its operations. News reports state that it now has no US employees in its California headquarters and it has halved its staff count in its Ukraine development centre to approximately 30 staff members.

In its 1Q results announcement, Nokia's assessment of the market outlook warned of leaner times ahead. Nokia expects the value of the global mobile device market to be lower in euro terms in 2008 than it was in 2007.

O2 UK has recently announced a mobile broadband (USB modem, or dongle) offering. Two packages are available to existing mobile or home broadband subscribers. Both include free access to 7,500 nationwide WiFi hotspots.

LG has recently released improved results with top-line growth again coming from displays and mobile communications, but bottom-line growth heavily dependent on mobile communications.

Nokia has posted very strong results for 1Q08 and said it is targeting share gains in a market that it believes will soften in the US and Europe.
