Software@Ovum is designed to assist IT users, software vendors and consultancies with both tactical and strategic decisions. We provide in-depth analysis and customised advice on the main technologies, markets, players and products in the global software market today.

Software@Ovum focuses on nine technology markets. Here we focus on BPM.

BPM

Business process management (BPM) is a process-oriented way of thinking about existing IT systems, and of procuring, designing, building and integrating new systems.

There is nothing new about the idea of modelling and analysing a business by examining the processes in which it engages. But BPM differs from historical approaches, because it explicitly aims to bridge the gaps between business requirements and technology capabilities. It does this by using technology tools to make it possible to automate business processes in a way that makes them easier to change in line with business requirements.

However, the 'BPM' term is heavily overloaded and there is a great deal of confusion among users about what BPM actually is. We explain what BPM really is, and how it affects existing IT systems and practices. We relate BPM to other areas such as business intelligence, business performance management, enterprise information integration etc.
