Asia-Pacific's mobile landscape shows saturation, consolidation and - in some markets - growth. 3G rollout is dictated by competitive as well as regulatory pressures, with multiple flavours of 3G - W-CDMA and EV-DO - seeing commercial launch. Yet this investment comes at a time when competitive pressures are pushing operators to innovate well ahead of market demand and price wars are eroding revenues per user.
Developing markets are still seeing growth - but now it is with low value prepay subscribers which is putting pressure on margins and network capacity. Operators are being forced by competition to innovate ahead of market demand. And while consolidation is occuring in some markets, others are adding new operators, even where growth has stalled. The great white hype is mobile data - but growth is modest rather than stellar. The trend is towards consolidation, bundling of mobile with fixed services and regional alliances between small operators to try to generate some competitive muscle against powerful competitors.
